What Is the ISO 42001 Foundation Certification?

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the world's first international standard for Artificial Intelligence Management Systems (AIMS). The Foundation certification validates your understanding of the standard's core concepts, requirements, and vocabulary — proving you can explain how AI governance frameworks work and contribute meaningfully to AIMS projects.

How to Prepare for the ISO 42001 Foundation Exam

The PECB ISO/IEC 42001 Foundation exam is a 60-minute, closed-book assessment with 40 multiple-choice questions. A score of 70% or above is required to pass. The exam is included in the course price ($399 AUD) — there is no separate fee.

The eLearning modules include embedded quizzes after each section that mirror the exam format. Work through every quiz, review incorrect answers, and re-watch the corresponding video chapters to reinforce weak areas. Pay particular attention to AI-specific terminology, the AIMS clause structure (clauses 4–10), and Annex A control themes covering AI risk, data governance, and transparency.

The exam voucher sits in your myPECB dashboard. Choose a date and time that suits you, verify your identity, and complete the remote-proctored assessment from home or the office. If you do not pass on your first attempt, you can retake within 12 months at no additional cost. After passing, download your PECB certificate, claim 14 CPD credits, and use the "PECB Certificate Holder in ISO/IEC 42001" credential.
