ISO 42001 Lead Implementer career guide

How to Become an ISO 42001 Lead Implementer (2026 Guide)

Becoming a PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer takes a pass in PECB's open-book exam (you may use a hard copy of the standard, the course materials and your notes from the course), five years of professional experience with two of them in AI management, 300 hours of AIMS project activities and an application to PECB (the Professional Evaluation and Certification Board); the PECB course is the usual first step. No experience is needed to sit the exam: with less, the same pass leads to the Provisional Implementer or Implementer level, and you upgrade later. Through a PECB partner course there is no separate exam or application fee: the course is A$699 + GST (A$768.90 inc. GST), with the exam voucher, two exam attempts and the certification fee included.

What does an ISO 42001 Lead Implementer do?

An ISO 42001 Lead Implementer plans, implements, manages, monitors, maintains and continually improves an artificial intelligence management system, or AIMS: that is how PECB describes what its Lead Implementer course prepares you to do. An AIMS is the management system an organisation runs to govern how it develops, provides or uses AI, built to ISO/IEC 42001:2023. ISO published the standard in December 2023. It specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an AIMS, and ISO says it is for organisations of any size involved in developing, providing or using AI-based products or services. PECB's certification scheme describes the credential as one for individuals aiming to demonstrate competence in implementing an AIMS and leading an implementation team.

Organisations are certified against ISO/IEC 42001 by an external certification body (ISO itself certifies no one); people hold a credential such as PECB's. Our ISO 42001 guide explains the standard itself.

What goes into an AI management system?

PECB's exam domains set out the work, stage by stage:

  • Planning: analyse the organisation's internal and external context, run a gap analysis, set AIMS objectives, write the AIMS project plan, establish the AI policy, carry out the risk assessment and draft the Statement of Applicability.
  • Implementing: analyse the organisation's AI landscape, design and implement AI controls, define and document the processes that operate the AIMS, and set up record management, a communication strategy, AI training and awareness programs and the management of AI operations, including change management.
  • Monitoring: measure the AIMS against its objectives, run an internal audit program and management reviews, and write nonconformity reports.
  • Improving and certifying: treat nonconformities at their root cause, drive continual improvement, help the organisation choose a certification body and prepare its people for the stage 1 and stage 2 certification audits.

Underneath sit clauses 4 to 10 of ISO/IEC 42001 and its Annexes A, B, C and D. Our ISO 42001 controls list sets out the Annex A controls.

What is the difference between an ISO 42001 Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor?

A Lead Implementer builds and runs the AIMS; a Lead Auditor audits one. PECB's Lead Auditor course teaches you to plan, conduct and close an ISO/IEC 42001 compliance audit in line with ISO/IEC 17021-1 and ISO 19011. Both PECB exams are 80 multiple-choice questions, 3 hours and open book, and one person can hold both credentials. See our guide to becoming an ISO 42001 Lead Auditor and the PECB ISO 42001 Lead Auditor course.

ISO 42001 Lead Implementer prerequisites: what you need before starting

What PECB asks for

PECB's main requirement for the course is a general knowledge of the AIMS and ISO/IEC 42001. Its exam rules add that no specific set of training courses or curriculum of study is required for a certification exam like this one; the exception is Foundation certificate exams, where the course is part of the requirements.

Do you need experience to sit the exam?

No. The experience rules apply when you apply for a credential, not before. PECB's handbook says everyone who passes the exam, or an equivalent PECB accepts, may apply for the credentials it covers: four levels, from Provisional Implementer with no experience to Senior Lead Implementer. The table below gives the years and project hours for each.

Optional first step: ISO 42001 Foundation

If AI management systems are new to you, start with the PECB ISO 42001 Foundation eLearning, A$279 + GST (A$306.90 inc. GST). PECB sets it as a two-day course with no prerequisites, and it leads to its own certificate, PECB Certificate Holder in ISO/IEC 42001 Foundation.

How to become an ISO 42001 Lead Implementer: the 5 steps

  1. Take ISO 42001 Foundation first (optional)

Take the PECB ISO 42001 Foundation course, A$279 + GST (A$306.90 inc. GST), if AI management system terms, risk assessment and the structure of ISO/IEC 42001 are new to you; otherwise skip it.

  2. Enrol in the PECB ISO 42001 Lead Implementer eLearning

Mindset Cyber delivers PECB's own ISO 42001 Lead Implementer course on myPECB at A$699 + GST (A$768.90 inc. GST): 26 sections, over 400 pages of course material, recorded video lessons and quizzes whose format, PECB says, closely mirrors the exam. The price includes the PECB exam voucher, two exam attempts, the certification fee, the first year of PECB certification maintenance and 12 months of access; completion earns 31 CPD credits.

  3. Pass the PECB ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer exam

The exam is 80 multiple-choice questions, 3 hours, open book, 70% to pass, sat online in the PECB Exams app, in one of PECB's scheduled online exam sessions that you pick in myPECB (the full format is below). A second attempt is included; PECB asks you to complete the exam, the retake and the certification application within 12 months of purchase. Mindset Prep is our optional practice-question app.

  4. Apply to PECB for the credential your experience supports

Passing the exam does not certify you. In myPECB choose Apply for Certification, pick the level your experience supports, add your work history and name two professional references. They must be people who have worked with you, not people you supervise or relatives, and PECB's system sends them an online questionnaire. The certification fee is already paid. PECB's candidate handbook gives you 12 months from purchase to apply; PECB emails the decision, and approved candidates download their certificate and digital badge from myPECB.

  5. Keep the credential current, and upgrade as your hours grow

PECB certifications are valid for three years. They renew when you report your CPD in myPECB (90 hours per three-year cycle for a Lead Implementer, 60 for an Implementer, 180 for a Senior Lead Implementer), pay the Annual Maintenance Fee and keep to the PECB Code of Ethics. PECB's Certification Maintenance Policy lists that fee at USD 390 per certificate for each three-year cycle; the first year is in the course price, and a Provisional credential pays none. Miss the CPD or the fee and the credential is suspended for up to 12 months while you catch up; if they are still outstanding after that, PECB can revoke it. An upgrade is a new application in myPECB (USD 100; PECB decides whether another exam is needed).

PECB's four Implementer credentials: Provisional to Senior Lead

PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 credential Professional experience AIMS project activities
Provisional ImplementerNoneNone
ImplementerTwo years, one of them in AI management200 hours
Lead ImplementerFive years, two of them in AI management300 hours
Senior Lead ImplementerTen years, seven of them in AI management1,000 hours

All four sit the same PECB ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer exam (or an equivalent exam PECB accepts) and sign the PECB Code of Ethics. PECB's candidate handbook and certification scheme put the specialist years in AI management; its course page words them as experience in artificial intelligence.

Which project activities count?

PECB publishes two lists. Its candidate handbook (version 1.5) says valid implementation activities include:

  • drafting an AIMS implementation plan
  • managing AIMS implementation projects
  • implementing the AIMS
  • managing documented information
  • implementing corrective actions
  • monitoring the AIMS performance
  • managing an AIMS implementation team.

Its course page and certification scheme (version 1.2) give a second list, of kinds of AI work: developing AI-powered solutions, designing AI-based systems, managing AI project portfolios, leading AI innovation teams, developing an AI strategy and roadmap, implementing AI governance and compliance programs, designing AI-based data pipelines, implementing AI-powered business intelligence solutions, developing and deploying AI-powered cybersecurity solutions, developing and implementing AI-powered autonomous systems, managing and designing AI-based predictive analytics, developing machine learning models, training and deployment of language learning models, implementing natural language processing (NLP) solutions, and developing sentiment analysis and text classification models.

Keep a dated project log from the start. PECB's handbook says it checks the log against the required hours, and the application asks for each role's dates and job title.

The PECB ISO 42001 Lead Implementer exam

How hard is the ISO 42001 Lead Implementer exam?

It is a professional exam in which, PECB's handbook says, candidates apply concepts, analyse problems and evaluate alternatives: 80 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours, each with three options, mixing stand-alone questions with scenarios that each carry five questions. PECB's handbook says 48 of the 80 measure evaluation and the other 32 measure comprehension, application and analysis; the evaluation questions sit in the planning, implementing and continual improvement domains. It is open book: you may use a hard copy of ISO/IEC 42001 (or a copy bought through the myPECB store, which opens inside the PECB Exams app), the PECB course materials and your personal notes from the course, in the app or printed, and PECB's exam rules add a hard-copy dictionary. The pass mark is 70%; PECB's handbook and exam rules give no pass rate.

What the exam covers: the six domains

PECB's candidate handbook splits the 80 questions across six domains (topic areas):

  1. Fundamental principles and concepts of an artificial intelligence management system: 17 questions.
  2. Artificial intelligence management system: 5 questions.
  3. Planning of an AIMS implementation based on ISO/IEC 42001: 20 questions.
  4. Implementation of an AIMS based on ISO/IEC 42001: 18 questions.
  5. Monitoring and measurement of an AIMS based on ISO/IEC 42001: 10 questions.
  6. Continual improvement and preparation for an AIMS certification audit: 10 questions.

The first domain also covers AI concepts such as machine learning, deep learning and neural networks, the terminology of ISO/IEC 22989 and the EU's classification of AI systems by risk level. The second covers clauses 4 to 10 of ISO/IEC 42001 and its annexes.

Sitting the exam online

Online exams run in the PECB Exams application, supervised remotely by a PECB invigilator through the app and your camera. The sessions you choose from in myPECB show the time in UTC and in your local time. You need valid ID (a national ID card, driver's licence or passport), cannot use phones, tablets or other secondary devices, and must be present at least 30 minutes before the start. If you sit the exam in a language that is not your first, PECB can give you 30 extra minutes when you ask on the day.

You see your result as soon as you submit, and PECB emails it too; if you fail, the email lists the domains where you performed poorly. A second attempt is included within the 12 months from purchase that PECB allows for the exam, the retake and the application, with no limit on retakes after that (retake fees apply; PECB's exam rules give no amount). A failed first attempt cannot be re-sat until 15 days after the exam date, so sit the first attempt at least a month before your 12 months end.

The eLearning Mindset Cyber sells is in English. PECB's List of PECB Exams shows this exam in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Turkish, Ukrainian and Korean.

How long does it take to become an ISO 42001 Lead Implementer?

For a person, there are three parts. An organisation's certification is a separate project: our ISO 42001 certification cost guide covers the audits.

The course: self-paced, about 30 to 40 hours

PECB's agenda runs the course over five days: introduction to ISO/IEC 42001 and initiating an AIMS implementation, planning the implementation, implementing the AIMS, then monitoring, continual improvement and preparation for the certification audit, with the exam on day five. The eLearning is self-paced; our estimate (not a PECB figure) is 30 to 40 hours of study, and you book the exam within your 12 months of access.

Provisional Implementer: apply once your pass is recorded

You can apply for Provisional Implementer as soon as your pass shows in myPECB. PECB's system sends your two references an online questionnaire, the Certification Department checks the application, and PECB emails the outcome. The handbook gives no processing time.

Lead Implementer: when the experience is met

The full title waits for five years of professional experience, two of them in AI management, and 300 logged hours of AIMS project activities. Without the years, hold a lower level and upgrade later.

Common roadblocks

  • No project log, so the hours cannot be proven.
  • References who are people you supervise or relatives, or who are slow to answer PECB's questionnaire.
  • Missing a deadline when the Certification Department asks for more documents: it then decides on what you sent, which can mean a lower credential.
  • Missing the handbook's 12-month window from purchase; after that, PECB reopens an application only on a written request, for a fee.

How much does it cost to become an ISO 42001 Lead Implementer?

Foundation and Mindset Prep on this list are optional. The course price covers the exam, a retake and the certification application; the recurring cost after that is PECB's maintenance fee, from the second year, plus USD 100 if you later apply to upgrade.

  • PECB ISO 42001 Lead Implementer eLearning: A$699 + GST (A$768.90 inc. GST), including the PECB exam voucher, two exam attempts, the certification fee, the first year of PECB certification maintenance and 12 months of access.
  • PECB certification application: included (USD 500 if you apply without a partner course).
  • PECB maintenance fee: USD 390 per certificate for each three-year cycle, as PECB's Certification Maintenance Policy lists it, paid in myPECB year by year or for all three years at once; the first year is in the course price, and a Provisional credential pays none.
  • Optional ISO 42001 Foundation: A$279 + GST (A$306.90 inc. GST).
  • Optional exam practice: Mindset Prep, A$99 + GST (A$108.90 inc. GST) for a year when added at the course checkout.
  • The standard: not included. The open-book exam allows a hard copy of ISO/IEC 42001, or a copy bought through the myPECB store, which opens in the PECB Exams app; ISO also sells it on iso.org.

Australian prices attract 10% GST, shown before checkout.

How much is the ISO 42001 Lead Implementer exam?

There is no separate exam fee through a PECB partner course: PECB's exam rules say the training fee includes the first exam attempt, one retake, the certification application fee and the first year of the Annual Maintenance Fee.

Taking the exam without a course

PECB's 2026 candidate handbook (version 1.5) prices a Lead exam at USD 1,000 and the certification application at USD 500. PECB's help centre says that route includes one exam attempt and no access to the official training materials, which the open-book exam otherwise lets you use; a retake needs an additional exam fee.

How much does ISO 42001 certification cost for an organisation?

That is a different spend: a certification body's audit fees plus the work of building the AIMS. Our ISO 42001 certification cost guide explains what drives it. For an individual, the costs are the ones listed above.

Lead Implementer course price by country

The course, exam and inclusions are the same in every market; only the currency and tax line change.

  • Eurozone: €427
  • New Zealand: NZ$863
  • Canada: CA$686
  • India: ₹46,599

PECB eLearning or PECB Self-Study: what each format includes

Two of PECB's delivery formats are self-paced. PECB eLearning is delivered by PECB Certified Trainers in pre-recorded video format, with quizzes and the official course materials on myPECB. PECB Self-Study gives access to the official PECB course materials to study at your own pace, and PECB's help centre says the recorded videos are available only in eLearning, not in Self-Study. PECB describes Self-Study as "suitable for participants with considerable knowledge of the subject who do not require assisted lecturing" (taught lessons). PECB's CPD Policy (June 2026) credits a five-day training course or eLearning with 31 CPD credits and Self-Study of the same five-day course with 16.

Mindset Cyber sells the ISO 42001 Lead Implementer as PECB eLearning. Our PECB eLearning vs Self-Study guide compares the two formats.

ISO 42001 Lead Implementer jobs and career paths

PECB aims the course at people who oversee and manage AI projects, consultants advising on AI implementation strategies, specialists who want to master implementing an AIMS to ISO/IEC 42001, people responsible for keeping AI projects within an organisation's AI requirements, members of AIMS implementation teams, and executives and managers deciding on AI implementation. In job terms, four roles fit the credential:

  • AIMS manager or AI governance lead: owns the AIMS once it runs, with its AI policy, risk assessment, Statement of Applicability, internal audits and management reviews.
  • GRC consultant (governance, risk and compliance): takes client organisations through implementation and certification, a direct route to logged project hours.
  • AI project or program manager: runs an AIMS implementation project through to the certification audit.
  • AIMS implementation team member: designs and implements AI controls, processes and documentation.

We do not publish salary figures. Check current listings for your city and industry.

Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor combined

Holding both lets you move between building an AIMS and auditing one; the audit side is in our ISO 42001 Lead Auditor guide. For the three PECB ISO 42001 courses side by side, see ISO 42001 training.

Is the PECB ISO 42001 Lead Implementer recognised?

PECB issues the credential under ISO/IEC 17024, the international standard for bodies that certify people, and UKAS (the United Kingdom Accreditation Service) accredits PECB for it. UKAS's schedule of accreditation for PECB (number 21923, issue 007, 27 August 2026) lists the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor under PECB's ISO/IEC 42001 certification scheme, version 1.2.

  • Accreditation. UKAS's schedule above names this credential; it does not list the Provisional, Implementer or Senior Lead levels. PECB's other ISO/IEC 17024 accreditations, from IAS (the International Accreditation Service) and COFRAC (Comité français d'accréditation), do not list any ISO/IEC 42001 credential.
  • Verification. Any employer can check a PECB certificate on PECB's Certificate Verification page, and approved candidates download their certificate and digital badge from myPECB.
  • Mindset Cyber and PECB. Mindset Cyber is a PECB Authorised Titanium Partner, PECB's highest partner level.

Frequently asked questions

How do I become an ISO 42001 Lead Implementer?

In five steps: take ISO 42001 Foundation if the standard is new to you (optional); complete the PECB ISO 42001 Lead Implementer course, which Mindset Cyber sells as PECB eLearning at A$699 + GST (A$768.90 inc. GST); pass PECB's 3-hour, 80-question open-book exam with 70% or more; apply in myPECB for the credential level your experience supports; then keep it current with CPD hours and PECB's maintenance fee. With no experience you can apply for Provisional Implementer once you pass; the full Lead Implementer title needs five years of professional experience, two of them in AI management, and 300 hours of AIMS project activities.

Is the ISO 42001 Lead Implementer exam hard?

It is a professional exam in which, PECB's handbook says, candidates apply concepts, analyse problems and evaluate alternatives: 80 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours, open book, with a 70% pass mark. PECB's candidate handbook says 48 of the 80 questions measure evaluation and the other 32 measure comprehension, application and analysis. A second attempt within 12 months of purchase is included in the course price; PECB's handbook and exam rules give no pass rate.

Is the ISO 42001 Lead Implementer exam open book?

Yes. PECB allows a hard copy of ISO/IEC 42001 (or a copy bought through the myPECB store, which opens inside the PECB Exams app), the PECB training course materials and your personal notes from the course, in the app or printed, and its exam rules add a hard-copy dictionary. The standard itself is not included in the course price.

How many questions are on the ISO 42001 Lead Implementer exam?

80 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours, each with three options; some stand alone and some come in scenario sets of five. By domain: fundamental principles and concepts of an artificial intelligence management system (17), artificial intelligence management system (5), planning of an AIMS implementation based on ISO/IEC 42001 (20), implementation of an AIMS based on ISO/IEC 42001 (18), monitoring and measurement of an AIMS based on ISO/IEC 42001 (10) and continual improvement and preparation for an AIMS certification audit (10).

What is the passing score for the ISO 42001 Lead Implementer exam?

70%. You see your result as soon as you submit the online exam, and PECB emails it too. If you fail, the email lists the domains where you performed poorly, and you can sit the included second attempt from 15 days after the first.

How much does ISO 42001 Lead Implementer certification cost?

Through Mindset Cyber, A$699 + GST (A$768.90 inc. GST) for the PECB eLearning, including the PECB exam voucher, two exam attempts, the certification fee, the first year of PECB certification maintenance and 12 months of access. PECB's Certification Maintenance Policy lists the Annual Maintenance Fee at USD 390 per certificate for each three-year cycle; the first year is included in the course price. Without a course, PECB prices the Lead exam at USD 1,000 and the certification application at USD 500.

Can I take the ISO 42001 Lead Implementer exam without training?

Yes. PECB's candidate handbook says candidates may take the exam without attending the training course, at USD 1,000 for a Lead exam plus USD 500 for the certification application. PECB's help centre says that route includes one exam attempt and no access to the official training materials, which the open-book exam otherwise lets you use.

Do you need experience to become an ISO 42001 Lead Implementer?

Not to sit the exam. Experience decides which credential you can apply for afterwards: Provisional Implementer needs none; Implementer needs two years of professional experience, one in AI management, and 200 hours of AIMS project activities; Lead Implementer five years, two in AI management, and 300 hours; Senior Lead Implementer ten years, seven in AI management, and 1,000 hours.

What are the requirements for ISO 42001 Lead Implementer certification?

For the full Lead Implementer credential: a pass in the PECB ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer exam (or an equivalent PECB accepts), five years of professional experience with two in AI management, 300 hours of AIMS project activities, two professional references and signing the PECB Code of Ethics. With less experience, apply for a lower level and upgrade later.

Can an individual get ISO 42001 certified?

Not to ISO/IEC 42001 itself: certification to the standard is for an organisation's AI management system, and external certification bodies perform it, not ISO. A person holds a credential about the standard, such as the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer, which PECB issues under ISO/IEC 17024, the standard for bodies that certify people.

Is the PECB ISO 42001 Lead Implementer certification accredited?

The certification is. UKAS, the United Kingdom Accreditation Service, accredits PECB for it under ISO/IEC 17024: the UKAS schedule of accreditation for PECB (21923, issue 007, 27 August 2026) lists the PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor. It does not list the Provisional, Implementer or Senior Lead levels.

What is the difference between ISO 42001 Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor?

A Lead Implementer plans, implements, manages and continually improves an AI management system; a Lead Auditor audits one, and PECB's Lead Auditor course teaches you to plan, conduct and close ISO/IEC 42001 audits in line with ISO/IEC 17021-1 and ISO 19011. Both PECB exams are 80 multiple-choice questions, 3 hours and open book, and one person can hold both credentials.

Do I need ISO 42001 Foundation before Lead Implementer?

No. PECB's main requirement for the Lead Implementer course is a general knowledge of the AIMS and ISO/IEC 42001, and Foundation is not required. The PECB ISO 42001 Foundation eLearning, A$279 + GST (A$306.90 inc. GST), suits people new to AI management systems.

Do I need ISO 27001 before ISO 42001?

No. PECB lists no ISO/IEC 27001 course or credential among the requirements for the ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer course or credential.

Can you do the ISO 42001 Lead Implementer course and exam online?

Yes. The eLearning runs on myPECB, the exam is taken in the PECB Exams app under remote supervision by a PECB invigilator, and the credential application is made in myPECB. Nothing requires attendance in person.

How long does it take to get ISO 42001 Lead Implementer certification?

PECB sets the course at five days, with the exam on day five; as self-paced eLearning, our estimate (not a PECB figure) is 30 to 40 hours of study. You can apply for Provisional Implementer once your pass is recorded in myPECB. The full Lead Implementer title waits for five years of experience, two in AI management, and 300 hours of project activities. PECB's handbook gives no processing time for applications.

How long is the ISO 42001 Lead Implementer certification valid?

Three years. PECB renews it at the end of the three-year cycle once you have reported your CPD hours (90 for a Lead Implementer) and paid the Annual Maintenance Fee, and you must keep to the PECB Code of Ethics. If the CPD or the fee is missing, the credential is suspended for up to 12 months, and PECB can revoke it if they are still outstanding after that.

Is the ISO 42001 Lead Implementer worth it?

It depends on your role. The course price covers PECB's exam, a second attempt, the certification application and the first year of maintenance; the exam-only route is USD 1,000 plus USD 500. UKAS accredits PECB for the Lead Implementer credential itself under ISO/IEC 17024, the course materials are allowed in the open-book exam, and the eLearning earns 31 CPD credits.

Is there an ISO 42001 Lead Implementer practice exam?

PECB's eLearning includes quizzes, and PECB says their format closely mirrors the certification exam. Mindset Prep, our optional exam-practice app, adds practice questions for this exam on the web, iOS and Android: A$99 + GST (A$108.90 inc. GST) for a year when added at the course checkout, or a subscription at mindsetprep.com.au.

What is an AI management system (AIMS)?

ISO describes ISO/IEC 42001 as the standard that specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS) within organisations, for organisations of any size involved in developing, providing or using AI-based products or services. In practice an AIMS covers the AI policy, AI risk assessment and AI system impact assessment, the Statement of Applicability, AI controls, documented processes, internal audits and management reviews.
