What is CompTIA SecAI+?

CompTIA SecAI+ (Security Artificial Intelligence Plus) is a vendor-neutral certification for security professionals whose organisations are deploying AI. The exam is CY0-001, launched by CompTIA on 17 February 2026. It validates three connected capabilities: securing AI systems against attacks aimed at models, data, and pipelines; using AI to strengthen security operations; and governing AI so it is deployed responsibly and defensibly.

SecAI+ is the first of CompTIA's expansion certifications. An expansion certification extends a skill set you already have rather than starting one. It is not an entry-level credential, and it does not replace Security+, CySA+, or PenTest+. It sits on top of them. Full details are on the official CompTIA SecAI+ certification page.

Who SecAI+ is for

Who SecAI+ is for

  • SOC analysts and security engineers whose organisations are putting AI systems into production.
  • Cloud, platform, and DevSecOps engineers who now have models, prompts, and inference endpoints inside their attack surface.
  • Security architects who need to threat-model AI systems rather than treat them as ordinary applications.
  • GRC and risk professionals who have to assess AI systems and are tired of doing it without technical grounding.
  • Experienced practitioners who already hold Security+, CySA+, or PenTest+ and want the AI specialisation on top.

Recommended experience: CompTIA suggests 3 to 4 years in IT and 2 or more years of hands-on cybersecurity, with Security+, CySA+, PenTest+, or equivalent. None of these is enforced when you book, but the exam is written for people who have them. New to cybersecurity? Start with Security+.

Skills you will demonstrate

Skills you will demonstrate

  • Secure the AI stack end to end: training data, models, pipelines, and inference endpoints.
  • Threat-model AI systems and defend against AI-specific attacks including prompt injection, data poisoning, model theft, and adversarial inputs.
  • Apply established security controls (access control, monitoring, supply chain assurance) to AI components that were not designed with them in mind.
  • Use AI to strengthen security operations: detection, triage, investigation, and reporting, with an understanding of where it fails.
  • Evaluate the risk of AI-generated output and of AI tooling introduced into the security workflow itself.
  • Apply AI governance, risk, and compliance practice: policy, acceptable use, model inventories, and regulatory obligations.
  • Explain core AI and machine-learning concepts accurately enough to make security decisions about them.

Exam domains

The CY0-001 exam covers four domains, weighted as follows. The weighting tells you what this certification really is: 40% of it is about defending AI systems themselves. Click any domain to see what it covers.

Domain Exam weight
Securing AI systems 40%
  • Securing the AI lifecycle: protecting training data, models, pipelines, and inference endpoints across build, deploy, and run.
  • AI-specific attacks: prompt injection, data and model poisoning, adversarial inputs, model extraction and theft, and unsafe model output.
  • Threat modelling AI systems: mapping the AI attack surface, which looks nothing like a conventional application's.
  • AI supply chain: third-party models, pre-trained weights, datasets, and the components and dependencies behind them.
  • Applying existing controls to new components: access control, segmentation, logging, and monitoring around models and their data.
AI-assisted security 24%
  • AI in security operations: using AI for detection, alert triage, investigation, and reporting in the SOC.
  • Automation and orchestration: where AI genuinely accelerates response, and where it introduces new failure modes.
  • Validating AI output: assessing reliability, hallucination, and bias before acting on machine-generated conclusions.
  • Securing the tooling itself: the risks introduced by putting AI tools inside the security workflow.
AI governance, risk, and compliance 19%
  • AI governance: policy, acceptable use, model inventories, ownership, and accountability for AI systems.
  • AI risk management: identifying, assessing, and treating risks specific to AI deployment.
  • Regulation and compliance: the emerging legal and regulatory landscape for AI, and evidencing compliance with it.
  • Ethics and responsible use: transparency, fairness, privacy, and the consequences of getting them wrong.
Basic AI concepts related to cybersecurity 17%
  • Core concepts: machine learning, deep learning, neural networks, and generative AI, at the level a security professional needs.
  • How models are built: training data, model types, fine-tuning, and inference.
  • AI architecture components: the pieces of a production AI system and how they connect.
  • Capabilities and limits: what AI can and cannot reliably do, which is the basis for every security decision that follows.

Career path with SecAI+

Where SecAI+ takes you

SecAI+ is not a job-title certification the way Security+ is. It is a differentiator: it says you can be trusted with the AI systems your organisation has already deployed, at a point where very few security people can. It maps most naturally onto roles like these:

  • AI security engineer
  • Security engineer or architect covering AI workloads
  • SOC analyst using AI-assisted detection and triage
  • Cloud and platform security engineer
  • DevSecOps engineer securing model pipelines
  • Application security engineer covering LLM-backed features
  • Threat and vulnerability analyst assessing AI systems
  • AI risk, assurance, or GRC specialist

How it fits your other certs

Stacking SecAI+

  1. Security+ (or CySA+ / PenTest+): the foundation SecAI+ assumes. Hold one of these first.
  2. SecAI+: the AI security layer, covering how you secure AI systems and how you use AI in security operations.
  3. PECB ISO/IEC 42001: the AI governance layer. SecAI+ secures the AI; ISO 42001 governs it. Together they cover both halves of an AI assurance role.
  4. PECB ISO/IEC 27001: the information security management layer that most AI programmes are anchored to.

Preparing for the exam?

SecAI+ is a young exam, so anchor your study to what CompTIA actually publishes rather than to any one third-party course:

  • The official CompTIA CertMaster range (CertMaster Learn, Labs, and Practice), sold direct by CompTIA. On a new exam, the official material is the safest signal of what will actually be tested.
  • The published CY0-001 exam objectives, free from CompTIA. Work through them domain by domain against the weightings above. 40% of the exam is Securing AI systems, so budget your study accordingly.

If your work is on the governance side of AI rather than the technical side, our PECB ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor courses cover building and auditing an AI management system. They pair with SecAI+ rather than compete with it.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a CompTIA SecAI+ exam voucher in Australia?

A$449 + GST (A$493.90 inc. GST) for a single CY0-001 voucher, or A$599 + GST (A$658.90 inc. GST) for the Voucher + Retake Assurance bundle. Australian buyers receive a GST tax invoice; orders from outside Australia are GST-free exports.

What is CompTIA SecAI+?

SecAI+ (Security Artificial Intelligence Plus, exam code CY0-001) is CompTIA's AI security certification, launched on 17 February 2026. It is vendor-neutral and validates three things: securing AI systems, using AI to strengthen security operations, and governing AI responsibly. It is the first of CompTIA's expansion certifications.

What does "expansion certification" mean?

An expansion certification is designed to extend an existing skill set rather than start one. SecAI+ assumes you already work in security and adds AI-specific depth on top. It complements core certifications such as Security+, CySA+, and PenTest+. It does not replace them, and it is not an entry-level credential.

Who is SecAI+ for?

Experienced security practitioners: SOC and security analysts, security and cloud engineers, DevSecOps, security architects, and GRC professionals whose organisations are deploying AI. CompTIA recommends 3 to 4 years in IT and 2 or more years of hands-on cybersecurity experience. If you are new to cybersecurity, start with CompTIA Security+ instead.

Do I need Security+ before I can sit SecAI+?

No. CompTIA recommends Security+, CySA+, PenTest+, or equivalent experience, but none of them is a hard prerequisite. No certification is checked or enforced when you redeem the voucher or book the exam. The recommendation reflects the level the exam is written at, not a gate: SecAI+ assumes working security knowledge, so sitting it without that background is difficult.

Does SecAI+ replace Security+?

No. Security+ is the broad, foundational cybersecurity certification. SecAI+ is a specialist layer on top of it, focused entirely on AI. They are complementary, and most candidates hold Security+ (or equivalent experience) first. Buying SecAI+ instead of Security+ as a first certification is not recommended.

What is the SecAI+ exam format?

A maximum of 60 questions, a mix of multiple-choice and performance-based, with a 60-minute time limit. The passing score is 600 on a scale of 100 to 900. The exam is currently offered in English.

What does the CY0-001 exam cover?

Four domains: Securing AI systems (40%), AI-assisted security (24%), AI governance, risk, and compliance (19%), and basic AI concepts related to cybersecurity (17%). The weighting makes the emphasis clear: Securing AI systems is by far the largest domain, at 40% of the exam on its own.

Is this an official CompTIA voucher?

Yes. Mindset Cyber is a CompTIA Authorised Partner. The voucher code we deliver is generated by CompTIA and is identical to one bought direct from the CompTIA Store.

How quickly will I receive the voucher, and how long is it valid?

Within 24 hours of successful payment, emailed to the address you provide at checkout. We pull each code from the CompTIA partner portal on demand and confirm it to you by email. The voucher is valid for 12 months from the date of issue.

Can I take the exam online?

Yes. Schedule the exam through Pearson VUE and choose OnVUE online proctoring, paying with your exam voucher at the Review and Pay step. You can also sit the exam in person at any Pearson VUE testing centre globally.

What if I fail the exam?

If you bought the Voucher + Retake Assurance option at A$599 + GST (A$658.90 inc. GST), your second attempt is free. If you bought the single voucher and need to retake, you will need to purchase another voucher. SecAI+ is a tight exam: up to 60 questions, including performance-based items, in 60 minutes. The Retake Assurance option is worth considering if you want a safety net.

What is the difference between the Single User and Retake Assurance options?

The Single User voucher gives one person one attempt at the CY0-001 exam for A$449 + GST (A$493.90 inc. GST). The Retake Assurance option at A$599 + GST (A$658.90 inc. GST) is the same voucher plus a second voucher that we issue if you fail the first attempt and send us proof. If you pass on the first try, the second voucher is simply not issued. The price difference reflects the safety net only.

Do you offer SecAI+ training, or just the voucher?

Mindset Cyber currently offers SecAI+ vouchers only. For preparation, the official CompTIA CertMaster range (sold direct by CompTIA) and the published CY0-001 exam objectives are the most reliable guides to what is actually tested; third-party study guides and video courses for CY0-001 are also now available. If your interest in AI is on the governance side rather than the technical side, see our PECB ISO 42001 courses.

How does SecAI+ compare to ISO 42001 (AI management)?

They solve different halves of the same problem. SecAI+ is technical: securing AI systems, defending against adversarial attacks and data poisoning, and using AI in security operations. PECB ISO/IEC 42001 is the governance layer: building and auditing an AI management system so AI is used responsibly and defensibly. Organisations deploying AI generally need both, and they are strong complements on a CV.
