What is CompTIA Security+?

CompTIA Security+ is a globally recognised foundational cybersecurity certification. It validates the core skills required for any cybersecurity role across threats and vulnerabilities, security architecture, security operations, and governance, risk, and compliance. The current version of the exam is SY0-701, released by CompTIA in November 2023.

Security+ is the most widely held cybersecurity certification worldwide and is recognised across Australian government and private-sector cyber roles. It is approved by the U.S. Department of Defense to meet directive DoD 8570.01-M for IAT Level II, IAM Level I, and CSSP roles. Full details are on the official CompTIA Security+ certification page.

Career path after Security+

Where Security+ takes you

Security+ is the most widely required entry-level credential in Australian cybersecurity recruitment. CompTIA lists it as the foundation for the following DoD 8140 work roles (the standard the US Department of Defense uses to map cyber jobs to certifications, and a useful proxy for Australian Government and IRAP-aligned roles):

  • Cyber defence analyst
  • Incident responder
  • Vulnerability analyst
  • Security control assessor
  • System administrator
  • Network specialist
  • Systems planner
  • IT project manager
  • Information security manager
  • Secure software assessor

Common next steps

Where to go after Security+

  1. CompTIA CySA+: defensive cybersecurity analyst skills (threat hunting, SOC operations, incident response).
  2. CompTIA PenTest+: offensive security, hands-on penetration testing methodology.
  3. CompTIA SecurityX: advanced security architecture and engineering for senior roles.
  4. PECB ISO 27001 Lead Implementer or Lead Auditor: the standards-and-audit layer that complements Security+ for GRC and compliance careers in Australia.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an official CompTIA voucher?

Yes. Mindset Cyber is a CompTIA Authorised Partner. The voucher code we deliver is generated by CompTIA and is identical to one bought direct from the CompTIA Store.

How quickly will I receive the voucher?

Within 24 hours of successful payment. The voucher code is emailed to the address you provide at checkout. We pull each code from the CompTIA partner portal on demand and confirm it to you by email.

How long is the voucher valid?

12 months from the date of issue. You can schedule and sit the Security+ (SY0-701) exam any time within that window, in person or via online proctoring.

Can I take the exam online?

Yes. Once you have redeemed your voucher at CompTIA Central, schedule the exam via OnVUE online proctoring through Pearson VUE. You can also sit the exam in person at any Pearson VUE testing centre globally.

What if I fail the exam?

If you bought the Voucher + Retake Assurance option ($799 AUD ex GST), your second attempt is free. If you bought the single voucher and need to retake, you will need to purchase another voucher. We recommend the Retake Assurance option for first-time candidates.

Is the voucher refundable?

Unused vouchers can be refunded within 7 days of purchase, less a 10% admin fee. Once a voucher has been redeemed at CompTIA Central, it cannot be refunded. This mirrors CompTIA standard voucher policy.

What is the difference between Security+ and other CompTIA certs?

Security+ is the foundational cybersecurity certification from CompTIA. It sits between A+/Network+ (IT entry) and CySA+/PenTest+ (cybersecurity specialisations). For Australian cybersecurity professionals, Security+ is the most commonly required entry-level credential.

Can I take the exam outside Australia?

Yes. After redeeming the voucher at CompTIA Central, you can sit the exam at any Pearson VUE testing centre globally or via OnVUE online proctoring from anywhere with a stable internet connection.

What is the difference between the Single User and Retake Assurance options?

The Single User voucher gives one person one attempt at the SY0-701 exam for $599 AUD ex GST. The Retake Assurance option at $799 AUD ex GST is the same voucher plus a second voucher that we issue if you fail the first attempt and send us proof. If you pass on the first try the retake voucher is not used and is not refunded. The price difference reflects the safety net only.

Do you offer Security+ training, or just the voucher?

Mindset Cyber currently offers Security+ vouchers only. For exam preparation we recommend a structured study path: the official CompTIA CertMaster Learn (sold direct by CompTIA), Professor Messer's free Security+ video course, and timed practice questions through any reputable provider. If you are also pursuing the ISO 27001 Lead Auditor or Lead Implementer track for compliance roles, see our PECB course range.

How does Security+ compare to ISO 27001 Lead Auditor?

Security+ validates foundational, vendor-neutral cybersecurity skills across threats, architecture, operations, and governance. ISO 27001 Lead Auditor validates the ability to plan and conduct ISMS audits against the ISO 27001 standard. They cover different problem spaces: Security+ is the operational security foundation, ISO 27001 LA is the audit and compliance layer. Many Australian cybersecurity careers hold both. See our PECB ISO 27001 Lead Auditor course for the audit pathway.
