Where it fits in New Zealand
Why New Zealand organisations ask for it
New Zealand regulates AI through existing law, such as the Privacy Act 2020, rather than an AI-specific act, so organisations that build or use AI are turning to ISO/IEC 42001 to show customers and boards how that AI is governed. Lead Auditor teaches you to audit an AI management system against the standard, as an internal auditor or on a certification body's audit team.

Frequently asked questions
Does the price include the PECB exam?
Yes. NZ$863 covers the official PECB eLearning, the exam voucher, two remote-proctored attempts, and the certification fee.
Is this course PECB eLearning or PECB Self-Study?
It is PECB eLearning, which PECB delivers through PECB Certified Trainers in pre-recorded video format, with quizzes and the official course materials on myPECB, and it earns 31 CPD credits on completion. PECB Self-Study is a different PECB format: the official course materials without the recorded lessons, which PECB describes as suitable for people with considerable knowledge of the subject who do not require assisted lecturing, and it earns 16 CPD credits for a course of the same length. PECB makes its video lessons available only in eLearning. NZ$863 is the price for this eLearning course, charged in New Zealand dollars, and it includes the PECB exam voucher, two exam attempts, the certification fee, the first year of PECB certification maintenance and 12 months of access. What PECB eLearning and Self-Study each include.
How many exam attempts are included?
Two. Your first sitting is included, and if you do not pass, your second attempt within 12 months is included too.
Are there any additional fees?
Not from us. NZ$863 is charged at checkout, in New Zealand dollars. The one ongoing cost is PECB's own Annual Maintenance Fee, which the PECB Certification Maintenance Policy sets at USD 390 per certificate for each three-year cycle and which keeps the credential active. Your first year is already included in the course price, so that fee starts in year two and is paid to PECB directly.
How long does the course take?
Most people finish in 30 to 40 hours of study over two to four weeks. The eLearning is equivalent to a five day course, and you have 12 months of access.
What is the exam format?
A 3-hour, open-book assessment of multiple choice and scenario questions, with a minimum passing score of 70%. It is remotely proctored via myPECB, and you book one of the scheduled online exam sessions within 12 months of enrolment. You need a webcam, a stable connection and government-issued ID.
Does it cover auditing the Annex A AI controls?
Yes. Several sections are dedicated to auditing ISO/IEC 42001 clauses 4 to 10 plus the Annex A controls, with practical examples on data governance, model risk and transparency requirements.
What experience do I need to be certified?
None to sit the exam, and passing it earns the certificate. The Lead Auditor designation itself requires five years of work experience, two of them in AI, plus 300 hours of AI audit activity. Without those hours PECB issues the Provisional Auditor credential on the same exam result.
Do I need a technical AI background?
No. The course is aimed at governance, risk, security and compliance professionals. Technical examples are explained in business language so you can work with data science teams.
Is a copy of the ISO 42001 standard included?
No, and you do not need it to complete the course or pass the exam. ISO/IEC 42001 is a licensed document, so if you want your own copy you buy it from iso.org or Standards New Zealand.
Who am I buying from?
Mindset Cyber, an authorised PECB training partner based in Australia. The course, the materials and the exam are PECB’s own and are identical wherever you enrol. You are charged in New Zealand dollars and supported by email.
